Softball Splits With Emory & Henry On Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team picked up a big conference win in game two against the Wasps of Emory & Henry, who had only dropped three ODAC contests all season. The Eagles now have a 9-9 ODAC record, which puts them in fourth place heading into the conference tournament with two games to go.

Game One: Bridgewater 3, Emory & Henry 10

The Wasps got off to a strong start with a two RBI home run from Anna Thomas. The visitors added one more run in the inning on a Courtney Herron RBI for the 3-0 advantage.

Emory & Henry took a 4-0 lead in the second on a RBI double and would pick up two more runs in the fourth for the 6-0 lead.

Freshman Kaitlyn Tirona put the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fourth with her third career home run.

The Eagles added two more runs in the fifth, starting with a Victoria Gontarz RBI single to send Torie Shifflett home and Sarah Wimer to third. Wimer crossed the plate to make it 6-3 on a Lindsey Talley RBI single up the middle. 

The Wasps scored in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt to make it 7-3 before Kendall Varner hit a three RBI home run for the 10-3 edge and win.

Talley, Tirona, Shifflett, Wimer and Gontarz all had one hit for Bridgewater. 

Carolyn Campbell started in the circle for the Eagles, allowing five hits and three runs. Emily Clifford stepped in, allowing eight hits and seven runs. 

Game Two: Bridgewater 2, Emory & Henry 1

All of the game two scoring action occured in the first inning, starting with Varner's second home run of the day for a 1-0 E&H lead.

The Eagles topped the Wasps one run inning with two of their own. Brooke Louden hit a two RBI single to left field to bring Tirona and Stephanie Carroll across the plate.

Neither team would record a run the rest of the game, giving the Eagles a big 2-1 victory.

Louden and Gontarz had two hits each for the Eagles with Carroll and Katrina Martin notching one a piece. Louden also pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and one run. The junior is currently third in the conference with a 1.88 ERA.

Bridgewater returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 for a doubleheader with Guilford at home. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
