Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bridgewater College softball team swept Mount Union and Illinois College to close out their Florida trip with two wins. The Eagles went 8-2 in the Sunshine State to bring thier overall record to 11-3.
Game One: BC 8, Mount Union 4
Mount Union started things off with a single in the top of the fifth before the Eagles started their streak of two hit, three run innings.
After being walked by the pitcher and moving to second when Avery Pinder was walked, Katrina Martin stole home as the Raiders unsuccessfully attempted to catch Pinder stealing for the Eagles first run of the day. Pinder would score herself on a Kaitlyn Tirona RBI single to make 2-1.
Martin singled again on her next at-bat in the second inning, and advanced to second as the Purple Raiders walked Pinder for the second time. Torie Shifflett loaded the bases on a single to set up Sarah Wimer's 2 RBI single to bring Pinder and Martin home for a 4-1 advantage.
Stephanie Carroll got Bridgewater rolling in the third inning with a single and ran to second on a Brooklynn Fridley sacrifice bunt. Carroll would score on pinch hitter Brooke Louden's RBI double to make it 5-1. Martin sent Louden home on the next at-bat with a RBI triple to give BC a 6-1 edge.
Bridgewater's hot bats continued to make contact in the fourth inning, beginning with a Shifflett single. Shifflet would be out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Wimer, but Wimer reached second when Mount Union walked Tirona. Carroll loaded the bases on another single to bring Fridley to the plate. The freshman hit a 2 RBI double to cross Wimer and Tirona and make it 8-1 Eagles.
The Purple Raiders would bring in three more runs, but it would not be enough to overtake the Eagles as they held on for the 8-4 win.
Carroll led Bridgewater with three hits while Martin and Shifflett each had two. Wimer and Fridley both picked up two RBIs.
Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs. The freshman is still undefeated on the mound.
Game Two: BC 4, Illinois College 2
Bridgewater put two runs on the board in the first inning, starting with a Shifflett RBI to send Martin home. Pinder crossed on the next at-bat thanks to a Wimer RBI.
The Eagles picked up their remaining two runs in the third inning on a Wimer single with the bases loaded allowing Martin to cross again. Carroll grounded out to second base on the next at-bat but picked up the RBI as Pinder scored.
The Lady Blues picked up their only runs in the third and seventh inning to make the final score 4-2 Bridgewater.
Fridley paced the Eagles with two hits while Wimer had two RBIs. Emily Clifford started on the mound for Bridgewater, allowing two hits and one run. Keristen Kennedy pitched three innings, allowing two hits, and Louden threw the final frame, allowing one hit.
The Eagles return to Virginia to face Southern Virginia on Thursday, March 12 in Buena Vista. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
