BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's swimming team won the meet on the final relay, defeating visiting William Peace 118-110 on Saturday.
The Eagles led by just a single point heading into the final 200 free relay. Jack Cataneo, Parker Davis, Cullen Beach and Travis McCauley swam 1:44.17 to beat Peace by nearly five seconds, including closing splits of 25.33 for Beach and 24.80 for McCauley.
Bridgewater held a three-point lead after a big event win from Benjamin Dillon in the 100 fly (1:04.50), and a DQ helped avoid a 1-2 WPU finish in the penultimate 200 IM and keep BC in the lead heading into the deciding relay. Dillon had also won the 200 fly earlier in the meet in 2:35.70.
Beach, Luke Wintersgill, Dillon and Cataneo set a school record in winning the opening 200 meter medley relay, recording a time of 1:55.78.
Beach then added two individual school records with wins in the 100 back (1:03.02) and 200 back (2:20.33).
Wintersgill set a school mark with his second place finish in the 200 breaststroke, in 2:43.87.
Cataneo added a win in the 50 free, in 26.74. It was Peace's freestylers who kept them in the meet however, with the visitors going 1-2 in the 100 free, 200 free and 400 free to go along with a win in the 800 free.
The Eagle men wrap up an abbreviated dual meet season with a record of 1-1. Bridgewater will now head to the ODAC Championships on March 5-7.
