Softball Concludes California Trip at La Verne

LA VERNE, Ca. – The Bridgewater College softball team dropped two games to La Verne on their final day in California.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 6, La Verne 12
  • Records: Bridgewater (3-4), La Verne (7-2)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles' bats were alive to start the contest with Torie Shifflett knocking down a single to third base on the first at-bat of the game. She crossed home on a Jazmyne Smith double to give BC a 1-0 edge. Sarah Wimer hit an RBI single of her own on the next at-bat to bring Smith home for a 2-0 advantage
  • Still in the first inning, Bridgewater made it a 3-0 game on a Kaitlyn Tirona RBI single. The Leopards had a strong start themselves, hitting a two RBI home run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Eagles lead to 3-2
  • Smith, already making her second plate appearance of the game in the second inning, earned her first home run of the season to bring in Shifflett who had hit her second single of the match to make it 5-2 Bridgewater
  • La Verne continued to respond, bringing in two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 5-4 before Morgan Lucas hit her first collegiate homer to push the Eagles lead back to two at 6-4
  • The Leopards would go on to score eight unanswered runs as the Eagles would only pick up two more hits in the game

Match Notes

  • Lucas had a career high three hits while Smith and Shifflett each had two. Smith also added three RBIs
  • Wimer and Pinder each stole a base for BC
  • Samantha Martin pitched two innings for the Eagles, allowing four hits. Emma Killion pitched the next three innings, allowing nine hits. Savannah Painter pitched the final inning, throwing 11 pitches with seven of those being strikes

Game Two

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 0, La Verne 8 (6 innings)
  • Records: Bridgewater (3-5), La Verne (8-2)

How It Happened

  • The Leopards took an early 4-0 edge before Kathryn Thomas picked up the Eagles first hit of the game in the top of third on a single to left field. Shifflett followed it up with another single immediately after
  • La Verne added two more runs in the fifth before Wimer produced the Eagles best chance of the game with a deep triple to right field. Not able to capitalize, the Leopards added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-0 lead and end the game

  • The Eagles will make their way back to Bridgewater to prepare for a battle with the Eagles of Mary Washington on March 10 in Fredericksburg
