WINCHESTER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's tennis team fell to Shenandoah 1-8 on Tuesday evening in ODAC play.
The Hornets swept the doubles points but not without a comeback effort at the No. 3 spot. As
Bryce Cline and
Nicholas Arnold fell behind 3-0 early but crawled back into the pro-set before falling 5-8.
In singles play, Shenadoah swept the top-four spots, but
Noah Hughes and
Ryan Briggman battled at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.
Briggman took the opening set with a late break of serve 7-5. The freshman fell behind 2-5 but stormed back taking four of the final five game to force a tiebreak. Briggman ultimately dropped the tiebreak 6-7(5) forcing a match tiebreak. Much like the match up to that point there was little separation between the two sides. Briggman had a match point but ended up dropping the decider 8-10.
Hughes used the tiebreaks to his advantage after dropping the opening set 5-7. The junior trailed through the majority of the second set before he saved four consecutive match points as he trailed 5-6 0-40 to force a second set breaker. Hughes dominated the tiebreak, not dropping a point on the way to level the match 7-6(0). The match tiebreak featured little separation until Hughes got a mini break late and capitalized on his second match point to secure the victory 10-7.
BC's season comes to a close with a 2-14 record and a 1-8 mark in ODAC play.
