THE BASICS:
Final Score:
Game one – No. 25 Lynchburg 4, Bridgewater 1
Game two – Bridgewater 5, No. 25 Lynchburg 4
Records: Bridgewater 10-12 (3-1 ODAC); No. 25 Lynchburg 17-5 (5-1 ODAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
  • Aniella Baldwin opened the game with a double the opposite way and the rookie advanced the third on a passed ball with no outs. Jazmyne Smith came to the dish later in the frame with one away and singled to left field and Baldwin broke for the plate, but was thrown out at home. Smith moved to second on the throw, but she was left stranded.
  • Lynchburg wasted no time hopping on the board as a walk and single put a pair of runners on with just one out in the home half of the first. A single drove in both runners and the Hornets did not stop there as the home side pushed two more runs across to make it 4-0 after one.
  • BC went down in order in the top of the second and third and the Hornets got the lead runner on in both the second and the third, but Delaney Lail kept BC within striking distance as the Hornets did nothing with the runners on.
  • Smith put a charge in the Eagles offense in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to left field that cleared the wall and got BC on the board at 4-1. Lail kept the momentum rolling as the pitcher doubled the opposite way. The Eagles failed to ride the momentum following the Lail extra base hit as they left her stranded. Lynchburg looked to respond and put runners on the corners, but a groundout to Mckenna Mueller at short ended the frame with it remaining a three run Lynchburg advantage.
  • Andrea Savage tried to get a rally going in the top of the fifth as the sophomore singled up the middle with one out, but again Lynchburg got out of the jam. Lynchburg had a base runner in the home half of the fifth but did not capitalize. Both Lail and Lynchburg's Kailey Dorcsis dug in from that point onward as neither side got a runner on base for the remainder of the contest.
GAME STATS:
  • Smith energized the BC offense with a 2-for-3 effort in game one along with the only run scored for BC. Baldwin, Lail and Savage all added hits to the cause as well.
  • Dorcsis (9-2) tossed a gem for the Hornets in game one. Her complete game featured eight strikeouts compared to just five hits and no walks to speak of. Alyssa Talayumptewa, Madison Barnes and Lexi Powell all registered multi-hit performances to add to the cause.
  • McKenzie Cauthorn (4-4) took the loss for the Eagles in the circle, but Lail's 5-0 scoreless innings in relief kept the Eagles within striking distance. The rookie allowed just four hits and struck out three Hornets to go along with keep Lynchburg 0-for-7 with runners on base.
GAME TWO
  • Bridgewater had a chance to strike first in the opening frame as Hannah Mahan doubled and Smith followed with a single to put runners on the corners with just one away. Lynchburg got out of the jam and went to work offensively as a pair of base knocks put two runners on with just one away. Talayumptewa stepped in next and lined out to center field, but a throwing error on the tag up attempt allowed for the lead runner to come around and score and make it 1-0 for the home team after an inning.
  • BC looked to strike back and a lead-off single by Savage gave the offense the legs it needed. Sarah Kate Tozier stepped in next and she reached on a throwing error, allowing for two runners on with just an out on the board. A fielder's choice and a strikeout got the Hornets out of the jam and they carried the momentum, tagging on a run with a double to left center to make it 2-0 after two innings.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the top of the third via the longball. Lail took advantage of the breezy day and lifted a ball to left field that cleared the boundary and sliced the deficit in half to 2-1. Elena Williams worked her first scoreless frame of the outing and BC rode the momentum. Savage reached on an error to open the home half of the fourth and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kaelyn Ramsey dug in next and delivered with a pinch-hit double to drive in Savage and even the score. Coach Pleskovic's crew was not done yet as Caroline Malandra drew a walk to turn the order back over to the top with two runners on and just one out. Lynchburg made a pitching change. The Hornets were able to get an out by virtue of a flyout, but Mahan dug in next and delivered with a single and chaos ensued. Malandra rounded third and broke for the plate. The throw short hopped the catcher and deflected off of her glove allowing for Malandra to score and Ramsey to sneak in just ahead of a tag by the pitcher after the recovery. Smith followed Mahan with a single to left allowing for Mahan to score and make it 5-2 BC after all the damage had been done.
  • Lynchburg struck back in the home half of the frame with a pair of singles to open the inning. BC got an out via a fielder's choice, but that moved the lead runner to third and out runners on the corners. Williams induced a groundout next, but it allowed for Lynchburg to cut into the lead as the runner scored from third. The Hornets followed that with a single to drive in another run and cut the lead to just one. The Eagles got out of the jam in the next at bat as Abby Byrum made a clutch grab on her back foot to end the frame with BC in front.
  • Samantha Martin took over in the circle for BC in the bottom of the fifth after the Eagles were sat down in order. The hornets loaded the bases with two outs but a grab by Mueller at short stop ended the frame and kept the Eagles in front. BC went down in order again in the top of the sixth, but this time Martin repaid the favor as she retired the Hornets in order in the bottom half of the frame. The seventh inning went by nearly the same script as a trio of groundouts from the Hornets locked up the Eagles' first victory over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 win over CNU in 2021.
GAME STATS:
  • Mahan and Smith highlighted the offense in game two with 2-for-4 efforts at the dish and a RBI each. Mahan also represented the game-winning run as she scored on a Smith base knock in the fifth.
  • Lynchburg totaled 11 hits in the game two loss including three multi-hit stat lines. Emily Charlton came into the game late for the Hornets and kept BC off the scoreboard with the exception of the winning run. The Hornets allowed just one earned run due to three errors.
  • Williams (3-3) picked up the win in game two after allowing three earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. Martin earned her first save of the season as she closed the game out for BC allowing just two hits in the final 3.0 innings.
