HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
- Roanoke got a runner aboard with two down in the top of the first before a strikeout from Samantha Martin in the circle stranded the game's first baserunner.
- BC was retired in order and Roanoke faced the same result from Martin to keep the game scoreless. The bottom of the second started with a strikeout from Maggie McCray for the Maroons, but a check swing gave BC it's first hit of the afternoon by McKenna Mueller. Tow more McCray punchouts left the BC shortstop stranded.
- Roanoke quickly loaded the bases with a single, a BC error and a walk with no outs. The next RC hitter grounded a ball back to Martin and she flipped it back to Schaaf to save the run and get the force out. The next Maroon popped up a ball in shallow right field and it was just deep enough to allow the runner at third to tag up and score unearned thanks to the reaching on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt earlier in the frame. Martin clutched up and struck out Madison Courts to limit the damage to just 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third.
- With a lead to work with, McCray went to work as she retired the next four BC hitters in a row before an Abby Byrum walk interrupted the streak. McCray retired the next eight Eagles she faced to not only leave Byrum stranded, but to maintain a 1-0 lead heading to the seventh.
- Martin would not be outdone by her counterpart in the circle. The senior retired the final seven Marons she faced and did not allow a run to give her mates a shot to tie the game with one swing in the bottom of the seventh. McCray got the first out thanks to a strikeout and a flyout quickly gave RC two away. Mueller gave the Eagles life with a single up the middle and put the game-tying run on base. Lexi Schaaf stepped in next and put together a long at bat before she became another strikeout victim to end the game.
GAME STATS:
- Mueller accounted for both BC hits in game one and Byrum was the only other Eagle tor each base.
- Four different Maroons tallied hits and Heather McQueeney was the only player to reach base multiple times for Roanoke.
- Both pitchers put on a clinic in their own ways. McCray went the advertised distance and tallied nine strikeouts while allowing just three baserunners in the shutout. Martin went the full distance for BC and struck out four while allowing just five baserunners and was not charged with an earned run.
GAME TWO
- Both teams looked to strike in the first. A walk gave Roanoke a chance before Delaney Lail induced a flyout to end the frame. BC was able to put both Jordan Wise and Jazmyne Smith on to open the inning with back-to-back singles and moved the pair into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Byrum before they were eft stranded after a strikeout and a flyout.
- Roanoke capitalized off of the pair of stranded runners with a walk to open the second before a Lily Burns homer off of the Dr. Snively Hitting Facility in left made it 2-0. Molly Ecroyd tried to fuel the BC offense with a single in the bottom of the second and she stretched that all the way to third after a Roanoke error fielding the opposite-field flare. The right fielder was left stranded after a groundout ended the inning.
- The Maroons looked to stretch the lead in the top of the third and did so as a walk by Erin Gorschboth gave them life. Gorschboth stole second and then a double by Courts drove her in to make it 3-0. BC ended the frame quickly to fend off further damage. Bridgewater put two runners in scoring position again after a single by Smith and a walk by Byrum. The duo moved to second and third after a groundout by Lail, but a strikeout was again the Eagles kryptonite.
- Mackenzie Cauthorn went to the circle for the Eagles and the birthday girl settled in quickly by retiring the side in order. BC was put away in order in the bottom half of the fourth, but Cauthorn returned the favor as she put the Maroons down in succession. Smith doubled in the home half of the fifth to break up the pitcher's duel, but again she was left stranded.
- Cauthorn's best work came in the sixth as she sat the Maroons down with back-to-back-to back strikeouts and then led off the bottom of the sixth with a double off the wall in right center. She was left stranded, and Roanoke tried to pounce with a double to open the seventh before Cauthorn fell back on the good 'ol strikeout to get out of the jam. Ecroyd singled to open the bottom of the seventh and gave BC hope. Kaelyn Ramsey hit next and squared a ball up, but it was snagged by the left fielder. Wise stepped in next, but her sharp liner was caught at first and was quick enough to double up Ecroyd and seal the deal.
GAME STATS:
- Smith returned to form with a three-for-three effort in game two. Ecroyd added to the effort with a pair of singles.
- Lail was on the hook for the loss after hurling the opening 3.0 innings and allowing a trio of earned runs. Cauthorn tossed the final 4-0 scoreless with seven strikeouts.
- Burns fueled the offense for Roanoke with her two-run blast. Lindsay Gedro tossed the complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits and sitting down four on strikes.
