Softball Drops Tight Contests to No. 4 Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Bridgewater College softball team dropped a pair of tight games to No. 4 Redlands, which made the WCWS last season.

Game 1
The Basics
Score: No. 4 Redlands 2, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 5-2, No. 4 Redlands 6-3

How It Happened
  • Caroline Malandra opened the day with an infield single and an error followed to put her on second. She advanced to third on a fielder's choice, but was thrown out at home on a ground ball in the next at bat to keep the game scoreless.
  • Redlands jumped on the board right away as a double and a stolen base put the leadoff runner on third base. A sacrifice flyout pushed the runner across to make it 1-0, but BC quickly regrouped and got out of the frame surrendering just the lone run.
  • Each team stranded runners in the second and third innings including the Eagles leaving a runner at second base in the third.
  • The Eagles finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back base knocks by Malandra and McKenna Mueller put two runners on. A field sacrifice bunt attempt and a deep flyout seemed to close the window for BC, but Jordan Wise delivered with two away. A single up the middle by the senior easily drove in Malandra and tied the game.
  • The Bulldogs struck back in the home half of the sixth as a pair of walks put two runners on with two outs. UR delivered with a single to left field to drive in the lead runner to make it 2-1. BC got out of the frame with a ground ball to Mueller at short stop and looked to get back in it. The Eagles got behind with two quick outs, but Mackenize Cauthorn legged out an infield hit to put the tying run aboard. Malandra dug in next and put up a battle at the plate, but a groundout ended the upset bid.
Match Notes,
  • Cauthorn (2-2) took the complete-game loss in the circle for BC surrendering six hits. Malandra led the offense with a pair of hits as the Eagles took on a preseason All-American in the circle.
  • Gandara (4-1) picked up the win as she went the distance for Redlands. Bard led UR with a pair of hits.

Game 2
The Basics
Score: #4 Redlands 4, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 5-3, #4 Redlands 7-3

How It Happened
  • Mueller singled the opposite way with two down in the top of the first, but was left stranded. Evelyn Rhoads got the nod in game two and retired the Bulldogs in order in the top of the first.
  • Lily Moyers singled with one out in the second inning and Ashley Matthews came on to run for her. Matthews swiped second and worked her way to third after a throwing error, but was left 60 feet away from scoring.
  • Redlands took advantage of the missed opportunity and singled with one out. Malndra made a nifty play at second for the second out, but as she tried to turn the double play her throw was off the mark and moved the runner to second base. The Bull Dogs followed with a pair of base knocks to drive in a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead after two frames.
  • Both pitchers started to settle in until a one-out single by the Bulldogs broke up the rhythm in the bottom of the fifth. The runner stole second and another base knock followed to put the runners on the corners. A ground ball followed in the next at bat as Mueller fielded it and went to the plate. The Eagles trapped the runner in a rundown and she was tagged out at the plate by Rhoads to keep it a two-run game.
  • Bridgewater went down in order in the top of the sixth and Redlands replied in the bottom of the frame as a pair of hits put runners on second and third with no outs. The Bulldogs scratched a run across with a sacrifice fly that followed, and they tagged another on in the same fashion to make it 4-0 heading to the seventh. Despite a trio of hard-hit balls by the Eagles, they went down in order as Redlands secured the sweep.
Match Notes,
  • Rhoads (2-1) took the loss for BC after surrendering all four earned runs and just one walk. Mueller and Moyers had the lone hits for BC in game two.
  • Ellinger (1-2) picked up the win with a complete game gem. She allowed just two hits and no walks for the Bulldogs. Scott had a pair of hits for UR while Kim drove in a pair of runs.
