Softball's Comeback Effort Falls Short to Roanoke on Saturday

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Softball dropped a pair of games to Roanoke on Saturday, including an extra-inning thriller in game two.

Game 1
The Basics
Score: Roanoke 5, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 23-12 (10-7 ODAC), Roanoke 17-14 (9-6  ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Mackenzie Cauthorn opened the top of the first with a strikeout, while a two-out walk put a runner on, but another strikeout left the Maroon stranded. Aniella Baldwin singled with one away in the bottom of the frame, but she was caught stealing.
  • Both teams went down in order in the second, and Roanoke put a runner in scoring position with an out thanks to a double. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for RC, and a flyout in foul ground followed. The lead runner tagged and scored just in front of the tag, and the ball got away. It rolled into the dugout, allowing the second runner to score and make it 2-0. A single followed, driving in the last runner in the bases-loaded situation, making it 3-0 for Roanoke.
  • Bridgewater had a chance to respond as Abby Byrum opened the inning with a walk and moved her way to third base after a bunt and a fielder's choice. A walk extended the inning, but a flyout left runners stranded on the corners. BC had another chance in the fifth as Jordan Wise singled with one out, but a strikeout and a flyout left her stranded.
  • Roanoke looked to add to the lead in the sixth, thanks to a leadoff single. A walk put another runner on for the Maroons with one out, but two more strikeouts by Cauthorn kept BC within striking distance. Olivia Eastlake doubled with two outs in the home half of the sixth, but she was left stranded.
  • The Maroons added to the lead in the top of the seventh. A one-out single put Roanoke in business, but the second out of the frame came after a hitter was hit by her own bunt. The next hitter was tagged by a pitch to extend the frame, and a single followed to drive in the lead runner and make it 4-0. With two runners in scoring position, a pitch got past BC's catcher, and the lead runner scored to make it 5-0. A pair of walks followed to load the bases, but Cauthon recorded another strikeout to get out of the jam. Leiah Branch drew a walk to open the bottom of the seventh, but a trio of flyouts left her stranded and secured the win for RC.
Match Notes,
  • Cauthorn (12-7) took the loss in the circle as she went the full distance and struck out seven Maroons. Eastlake led BC's offensive charge with a pair of hits, while Baldwin and Wise added hits for BC as well.
  • Compton (7-6) picked up the win for Roanoke after allowing just four hits over the seven innings of work. Colontrelle drove in a pair of runs to lead the Maroons offensively.

Game 2

Records: Bridgewater 23-13 (10-8 ODAC), Roanoke 18-14 (10-6 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • Roanoke stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, including a runner at third. Baldwin singled with one away in the bottom of the frame, but a double play spoiled BC's plans.
  • Each side stranded a runner at third base in the second frame, and Roanoke looked to attack once again in the third. A single opened the stanza, but two quick outs followed. The Maroons responded with a single back up the middle, and another followed to drive in the lead runner and make it 1-0 with two runners on. Bell stepped in next for Roanoke and swelled the lead on one swing as she homered to left field to make it 4-0. Elena Williams came in and struck out the only batter she faced to end the inning.
  • Baldwin singled again for BC in the bottom of the third, but she was left stranded. Both teams went down in order in the fourth inning, and Roanoke followed by putting a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the fifth. A groundout to Andrea Savage at third spoiled any plans the visitors had to add to the lead. BC replied as Savage led off the fifth with a single. Kaelyn Ramsey followed with a fielder's choice to to herself aboard and McKenna Dyton dug in next. Dayton doubled down the line in right and took off for third, although Ramsey was stopped on the ba in front of her. A rundown ensued, and an errant throw to the plate allowed Ramsey to score and Dayton to safely reach third. Wise followed with a base knock to drive in Dayton, and the Eagles had cut the lead in half. McKenna Mueller followed and drew a walk on a long at bat to put two runners on with just one away, but a flyout and a fielder's choice ended the frame.
  • Roanoke went down in order in the sixth, and Savage succeeded at the plate again with a single. Ramsey followed with a base knock of her own, and BC had a pair of runners on with one out. RC made a change in the circle, but it changed nothing as Dayton singled to load the bases. Baldwin followed an out later with an infield hit to drive in Savage and make it 4-3. Roanoke got out of the bases-loaded jam after an infield pop-up, but the damage was done.
  • RC went down in order in the top of the seventh, and Eastlake opened the seventh for the Eagles in a big way as she launched a ball out of the park for a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4. Schaaf followed with a single, and her runner was moved to second, but a lineout, double play sent the game to extra innings.
  • Roanoke opened the top of the eighth by trying to lay down a bunt; BC could not field it cleanly, allowing the runner to reach and the tiebreak runner to come around and score to make it 5-4. Another bunt followed to move the runner to second, and a ground ball followed that, but another error came from it. The runner reached safely to put a Maroon on each corner with just one out. A sacrifice fly out followed to drive in a run and make it a two -run edeg for Roanoke. a Walk followed to put runners on the corners again, with two away and another error allowed Roanoke to add to the lead at 7-4. A groundout to Mueller at shortstop finally ended the frame with BC trailing. The Eagles weren't done. A flyout moved the teibreak runner into scoring position, and Dayton delivered again as she doubled to the wall in straight-away center to make it 7-5. A shallow flyout gave Roanoke the second out, and a strikeout closed the deal on the sweep for the Maroons.
Match Notes,
  • Kylie Jones (1-3) was tagged with the loss for BC as she tossed 3.0 innings in relief, but did not allow a hit or an earned run. Baldwin, Dayton and Savage each had days to brag about at the plate in game two. Baldwin led the way with four hits and an RBI, while Dayton and Savage each had three hits and scored. BC had a total of 15 hits in game two.
  • Perkins (1-1) got the win for Roanoke in relief. Michaels and Bell had multiple hits for the Maroons.
