BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Averett University shut out Bridgewater College, 1-0, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday.

Averett starter Kyle Lamantia took a no-hitter into the bottom of the ninth inning. Lamantia retired the first two batters in the ninth before Kevin Navedo broke up the no-hit bid with a triple over the leftfielder's head. Lamantia walked Cameron Stanley on a 3-2 pitch and the Cougars then went to the bullpen for sidearmer Avery Spicer. The Averett freshman struck out Bridgewater pinch-hitter Hunter Mohr to preserve the 1-0 victory for the Cougars.

The Cougars scored the game's only run in the top of the fourth inning. Bridgewater lefty Sam Imeson hit Jason Maggs to start the inning and, with one out, Tucker Majetic walked. Both runners advanced on a balk and Maggs scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Averett lead.

Despite being held hitless for 8.2 innings, the Eagles had opportunities as Lamantia walked seven batters. Bridgewater had runners on base in six different innings. The Eagles left two runners in scoring position in the second inning.

Brandon Floyd started for the Eagles and pitched two shutout innings. Kyle Hasforth, Bryce Masters, Brett Tharp and Ryan Skadra combined to blank the Cougars over the final five innings.

Bridgewater, now 7-15, is back in action Saturday when the Eagles host Roanoke College for an ODAC doubleheader.
