Creed's Hit Drives In Winning Run In The 14th Inning As Eagles Split With Maroons

Jacob Talley hits for the Eagles.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater's JT Creed singled to right with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning, scoring Jacob Talley from second with the winning run to give the Eagles a 7-6 victory and a split of Saturday's doubleheader with Roanoke. In the first game, the Maroons scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Eagles 4-3.

The Maroons led 5-1 after four innings of the second game, but the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half. Jacob Grabeel led off the fifth with a solo homer and Jarrett Biesecker followed with a triple. Talley plated Biesecker with a sacrifice fly to pull the Eagles to within 5-3.

The Maroons still led 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning with closer Kevin Ledford coming on to pitch. Ledford, who earned the save in the opener, walked the first three batters to load the bases with no outs. Ledford struck out the next two hitters, but Talley lined a single to right, scoring two runners to tie the score at 5-5.

Roanoke took the lead in the top of the 12th on a run-scoring single by Jack Howard, but the Eagles responded in the bottom of the inning. Talley led off with a double for the Eagles and, with one out, Brett Jones walked. Both runners advanced on a groundout and Talley scored on a single by Creed through the right side of the infield to tie the score at 6-6.

Roanoke missed a chance to take the lead in the top of the 14th when the Maroons had the bases full with two outs. George Killian came in from the bullpen to pitch for the Eagles. Killian's first pitch got past catcher Cameron Stanley, but Stanley tracked the ball down and flipped to Killian who put the tag on Will Merriken at the plate for the third out of the inning.

Talley led off the bottom of the 14th inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luke Paczewski. The Maroons intentionally walked Brett Jones to put runners on first on second. Stanley then hit a grounder to the pitcher and Jones was out at second on the force play for the second out of the inning. With runners on the corners, Creed lined a single to right, scoring Talley to give the Eagles the 7-6 victory.

Grabeel led the Eagles in Game 2 with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Talley was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and Creed was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Roanoke scored on unearned run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead in the opener and the lead held up until the bottom of the fourth inning. Talley walked to lead off the fourth and Paczewski was hit by a pitch. Talley was picked off second for the first out of the inning, but Jones singled to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Stanley belted a long homer over the left field fence, giving Bridgewater a 3-1 lead.

Starter Chad Lenz allowed no earned runs in his seven innings of work and Ryan Mason pitched a scoreless eighth to keep the Eagles on top, 3-1.

The Maroons rallied in the top of the ninth against reliever Tucker Garrison as Scott Ellis chased home a run with a triple and a single by Will Smith scored Ellis with the tying run. Ryan Skadra came on to pitch for the Eagles and retired two batters before Gavin Kandrick singled to left, scoring Smith with the go-ahead run.

Jones paced the offense in the opener with two hits.

Bridgewater (8-16 overall, 3-7 in the ODAC) returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles host Hood in a non-conference game.
