Eagles Split With E&H To End Season

Jacob Talley hits for the Eagles.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College closed out its regular season Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with Emory & Henry. E&H won the opener 9-8 in 10 innings while Bridgewater took the win in Game 2, 13-8.

Saturday's effort was not enough to get the Eagles a spot in the ODAC playoffs as Bridgewater finished one game behind Eastern Mennonite for the final berth in the conference tournament.

Bridgewater scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead in the first game. With one out, Jacob Grabeel singled and moved around to third on a double by Jacob Talley. Luke Paczewski walked to load the bases before Cameron Stanley singled up the middle, driving in two runs to put the Eagles up 2-1. After Kevin Navedo walked, Brett Jones lined a single to right, scoring Paczewski to make it 3-1.

The Wasps scored a run in the fourth to pull within 3-2 and the Eagles missed a chance to pad their lead in the bottom half of the inning when they left the bases full. Missed opportunities in the early frames would come back to haunt Bridgewater as the Eagles left nine runners on base in the first four innings of play.

The Wasps hung four runs on the board in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Joe Tolone delivered the key blow with a bases-clearing, three-run triple. Another run in the sixth inning put the visitors on top 7-3.

Bridgewater rallied in the bottom of the sixth and cut the deficit to a single run. The Eagles loaded the bases and Paczewski cleared the sacks with a three-run double, pulling the Eagles to within 7-6.

E&H added a run in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles tallied once in the eighth and once in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Talley led off the eighth with a double and took third on a single by Stanley. Talley scored on Navedo's sacrifice fly, making the score 8-7. Bridgewater pulled even in the bottom of the ninth when Paczewski's two-out single scored Grabeel to tie the game at 8-8.

Corbin Hockensmith pushed the Wasps back out front with a run-scoring single in the top of the 10th and the Eagles were unable to push across the tying run in the bottom of the inning as the Wasps escaped with the 9-8 win.

Talley finished the opener 5-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Eagles' offense. Paczewski was 3-for-5 with four RBIs while Jones finished 4-for-5 with one run batted in.

After E&H took an early 1-0 lead in the second, Bridgewater used the long ball in a nine-run second inning to take control of the game. Paczewski and Stanley led off the inning with back-to-back dingers, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Navedo walked before Phillip Herber belted a one-out, two-run homer to make it 4-1. Talley chased home two runs with a double and Paczewski added a runo-scoring single for a 7-1 Eagles lead. Navedo belted a deep double to center, scoring two more runs to make it 9-1.

Bridgewater added a run in the third and three more in the fourth to pull away. Navedo was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and Jones followed with a single through the left side of the infield. With one out, Garrison Wright singled up the middle, scoring Navedo to make the score 11-2. An infield hit by Jarrett Biesecker loaded the bases and Grabeel followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield, putting the Eagles on top 13-2.

Six players - Talley, Biesecker, Grabeel, Paczewski, Jones and Herber - each finished the second game with two hits. Paczewski had three RBIs while Grabeel, Talley, Navedo and Herber each contributed two RBIs.

Bridgewater ended its 2019 season with a 15-23 overall record and a 9-13 mark in the ODAC.
