ROANOKE, Va. - The Bridgewater College IHSA team experienced a tough start in its Region 2 season-opener Saturday as the Eagles finished sixth at Hollins University.
The team's struggle started early in the first class when Michael Golinowski's horse stopped and collapsed on course. Both horse and rider were fine, but Golinowski was unable to return to competition for the day.
First-year rider Caroline Warren was third in Intermediate Over Fences for Individual points with Georgia Osborne taking fifth for the team. In the Limit Over Fences division, Katelyn Dugan was second for the team and Emily Nuthall placed fifth as an individual.
Competing in the flat classes, Intermediate riders Georgia Osborne took fourth for the team and Warren placed third as an individual. In the Limit division, Dugan won for team points and Nuthall finished fourth.
In Novice on the Flat, Cailyn Leo was second while Susan Jenkins took second in Pre-Novice.
At the end of the day, Introductory riders Kelsea Lakeland and Courtney Yancey had second-place efforts for individual and team points, respectively.
The host Hollins team won the event with 35 points. Bridgewater finished the day with 26 points.
The IHSA team will compete in two shows next weekend. Bridgewater will host Saturday's IHSA show at the Bridgewater College Equestrian Center. The team will travel to Lynchburg for Sunday's show.
