Rookies Help Lead Eagles Past Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. - The Bridgewater College field hockey team won its second game in as many days with a 4-0 win at Ferrum on Sunday.

The game had been rescheduled from Wednesday due to thunderstorms.

Freshman Emily Matisons scored twice in the first half, her second straight game with two goals and third straight with multiple points. Classmate Jacqueline DiFulvio added a goal and an assist in the opening half.

The Eagles also recorded their fourth straight shutout and fifth in six games with three rookies- Ali Bishop, Alexis Thomasson and Emily Witzke all seeing time in the cage.

Matisons opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play with an unassisted tally.

Just 6:14 later she scored her second of the day on a penalty corner, after scoring twice on corners yesterday vs. Randolph-Macon.

DiFulvio got on the board in the 20th minute, with Matisons providing the assist.

DiFulvio then assisted Tessa Tierson late in the first half to give Bridgewater a 4-0 lead heading into the break.

Tierson led the Eagles with six shots as the Eagles held a 21-2 advantage overall in the category.

Tierson opened the second half with two shots that were both blocked by Ferrum defenders, with FC goalie Courtney Gosselin (three saves) then preventing Matisons from completing a hat trick.

Bridgewater improves to 6-3 and will travel south on fall break to play Rhodes and Hendrix next weekend.
