georgia howard counters up the field

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team faced nationally-ranked Centre College on Sunday, losing 5-1 to the #18 Colonels.

Georgia Howard scored the Eagles' goal, tipping a Karinne Moyer shot into the cage in the fourth quarter.

Centre had two good chances go just wide in the opening minutes, from Caroline Brotzge and Meredith Wickenheiser.

Goalie Emily Witzke blocked a turnaround shot by Brotzge, before Centre opened the scoring from Megan Coomes.

Witzke made a good blocker save as Sarah Biggs redirected Brotzge's shot at the doorstep. The Colonels added a second just before the end of the first quarter however, as Savannah Elpers was able to make the turn around Witzke.

Brotzge continued to be active for the Colonels, getting her second assist of the day in the second quarter as Centre took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The Eagles controlled possession for stretches of the third quarter. Early on, Emily Jencks laid a pass back to Howard to earn BC's first penalty corner of the game.

A Howard shot was saved with two minutes left in the third as part of a run of six straight Bridgewater corners. Meghan Obaugh also forced a high blocker save, but the Eagles were unable to get on the board until the final period.

Witzke (8 saves) was replaced by Ali Bishop in the third quarter but the Colonels immediately went on the break and scored for a 4-0 lead. Bishop would finish with 10 saves over the final 25 minutes of action.

Bridgewater (1-7) will host CNU on Wednesday night. Centre improves to 8-0 on the year.
