BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team dominated their Homecoming matchup vs. Ferrum, putting 38 shots on goal and getting multiple hat tricks in an 8-0 victory.
Junior Courtney Cooke had three goals and two assists while putting 12 shots on target, and classmate Kelsey Hicks also recorded a hat trick. Karinne Moyer finished with two goals and two assists while sister Kallie Moyer assisted on the opening two points of the day.
Kallie broke down the right side and fed Karinne to put Bridgewater on the board in the opening quarter. She then recovered her own rebound and passed it over to Cooke for a 2-0 first quarter lead.
Ferrum goalie Mia Holmes made 12 saves in the first quarter alone and finished with 28 overall. After Cooke made it 3-0 in the second quarter, Holmes stopped Taylor Wood from point-blank range just before halftime off a nice crossfield pass by Cooke.
Hicks ripped a third quarter shot into the corner off a Karinne Moyer pass for her first goal. Karinne then had a shot blocked off the goalline by Rylee Smith, but the Ferrum defender covered it up- leading to a penalty stroke and a Cooke hat trick.
Hicks made it 6-0 in the third quarter off an assist from Alexandra Rose.
In the fourth quarter, Cooke's shot led to a defensive save by Haleigh Horne but the Eagle pounced on the rebound and passed it over to Karinne Moyer to make it 7-0.
Hicks completed her hat trick on a shot from the outside of the circle.
Ali Bishop earned the win without needing to make a save, while Brooke Hamm stopped one fourth quarter shot in relief.
Bridgewater improves to 4-10, 2-2 ODAC and will travel to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday.
