Now in his 38th season as the architect of the Bridgewater Track and Field program, Shane Stevens has molded the Eagles into one of the most competitive and respected teams in Division III Track and Field.
Bridgewater track & field legend Stevens was named the region's Male Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020. In his 38th year coaching the sprints, hurdles and relays, he had athletes combine for 52 points at the ODAC Championships. His athletes lead the South/Southeast Region in two events, with Davonta Womack topping the nation in the 60 meters.
In 2019, the Bridgewater men's track and field team won the ODAC outdoor title. Both programs sent a total of nine athletes to the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Davonta Womack won the national championship in the 100 meter dash, while Jamie Hiegel, Calista Ariel, and the 4x100 meter relay team all earned All-American honors.
In 2018, the Bridgewater men’s and women’s track and field teams qualified a program best nine athletes for the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the men’s team finished a program best 8th in the team standings at the National Championships. The Eagles were led by senior Davonta Womack who was crowned the 100m Dash National Champion, running a meet, facility, ODAC and school record 10.20.
In 2016, the Bridgewater College men and women won both ODAC indoor and outdoor titles. The women's team won their first ODAC Outdoor Championship since 1998. Bridgewater had two athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and three athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Eagles also had three athletes named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
The Bridgewater men won both the ODAC indoor and outdoor titles in 2015, with the women adding a second consecutive indoor conference title. The Eagles had a combined four NCAA individual qualifiers and four CoSIDA Academic All-District selections.
In 2014, the men's team finished second at both of the ODAC Indoor Meet and the ODAC Outdoor Championships. The women's team earned their first ODAC title at the indoor meet and finished second at the outdoor championship meet.
Stevens has been named ODAC Outdoor Coach of the Year 10 times and ODAC Indoor Coach of the Year 10 times. He has been named the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Coach of the Year three times, including with the men's outdoor team in 2015 and the women's 2014 indoor team.
Stevens is a 1979 graduate of Bridgewater and was an All-ODAC defensive back and captain of the BC football team. He also holds a master's in Business Administration from James Madison University. He serves as an instructor in the college's Math and Computer Science department along with his coaching duties.
Stevens lives in Mt. Crawford along with his wife, Xan. The couple has two boys- Leland and Carson.
