VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team edged Virginia Wesleyan 12-11 to grab their first ODAC win of the season.
Blake Mann scored what would go down as the winning goal off an assist from freshman Eric Husselbaugh, making it 12-10 with 9:21 left in the game.
The Marlins made it interesting with a goal from Joe Couture with 3:49 remaining. The Eagles then forced two turnovers, one caused by Brandon Schick and the other leading to a ground ball pickup by Tyler Nieto, to protect the one-goal margin.
Virginia Wesleyan got two final chances in the final minute and a half. Kevin Metzger (18 saves) stopped a shot by Couture, and the Marlins couldn't get another attempt off after forcing a turnover and taking back possession in the last 60 seconds.
Mann had a hat trick while Husselbaugh totaled two goals and an assist. Mason Gauntt had a game-high six ground balls.
Senior Daniel Brown became the school's all-time assist leader with 44, equaling the mark on Justin Calabrese's second quarter man-up goal and breaking it on a Mann goal with 3:46 left in the third.
Bridgewater jumped out to a 4-0 lead with goals from Taylor Phipps, Jake Pangle, Brown and Husselbaugh.
The Marlins answered with four straight of their own. Phipps, Calabrese and Mann then struck for the Eagles, who took a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Bridgewater, who has beaten Virginia Wesleyan three straight times (twice by a single point), is now 6-3, 1-2 ODAC.
