LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee scored three goals during a 13-minute span in the second half Sunday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles 3-0 in the championship game of the ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the opening half. The Generals held a 6-1 lead in shot attempts in the first half and a 4-1 edge in corner kick opportunites.
The contest remained scoreless until the 53rd minute when the Generals found the back of the net for the first time. Generals' defender Jack Rawlins gathered up a loose ball in front of the goal, but his shot was stopped by Eagles' keeper Quentin Boric. The ball bounced to the foot of Viktor Dolberg and the W&L senior cleaned up the rebound for his third goal of the season and 1-0 Generals' lead.
The Generals struck again in the 60th minute when Dolberg possessed the ball inside the 18 and found Dylan Ritch cutting through the box for a goal from close range, making the score 2-0.
Three minutes later W&L added its final goal when Dolberg sent a pass from the top of the box to Erik Recke and Recke converted the goal for the final 3-0 margin.
Bridgewater had two strong chances in the second half, but each time W&L keeper Michael Nyc came up with the big save. Leo Alcantara hit a shot from 25 yards out that was caught by Nyc just under the crossbar. Nyc made another tough save in the 83rd minute when Justin Thorburn hit a solid shot from 20 yards out, but Nyc made a diving save and punched the ball out of the box.
Bridgewater's Boric, Matt Pagano and Alcantara were named to the all-tournament team.
The Eagles finish the season with an 11-7-1 record, the most wins for a Bridgewater team since 2003 when the Eagles won 12 matches. The appearance in the championship game was the first in program history.
