LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College scored two first-half goals and then held off a Bridgewater challenge in the second half to defeat the Eagles 3-1 in the first round of the ODAC men's soccer tournament.
Randolph took the lead in the 18th minute when the Eagles were whistled for a foul in the box and Gabe Krueger converted the penalty kick, giving the WildCats a quick 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, the hosts scored again when Krueger assisted on Noah Carney's goal for a 2-0 Randolph advantage.
The score was still 2-0 midway through the second half when the Eagles mounted a challenge. Senior forward Thomas Whilte pulled Bridgewater back into contention when he slipped a shot past WildCats' keeper Erick Cortez-Martine, making the score 2-1 in the 67th minute.
Randolph put the contest away when Carney netted his second goal with six minutes left to play for the final 3-1 margin of victory.
Bridgewater struggled to muster an offensive attack in the contest as Randolph finished with a 15-3 advantage in total shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Bridgewater put all three of its shot attempts on frame. Eagles' keeper Mark Collins finished the contest with five saves.
The Eagles finish the 2019 season with a 5-12-1 record.
