Men's Tennis Slips Past St. John Fisher

Sonet Gandhi serves for the Eagles.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team slipped past St. John Fisher, 5-4, Monday at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead at the completion of doubles action. Bridgewater took a close victory at No. 1 doubles as Canon Secord and Freddie Roberts edged Jon Harper and Dustin McCullough, 8-6. The Eagles had an easier time at No. 2 doubles where Sonet Gandhi and Matthew Gordon took an 8-2 victory over John Miller and Jarrett Pelton. The Cardinals salvaged a point when Tim Christman and Jordan O'Connell defeated Nicholas Kiser and Robert Williard 8-2.

The Eagles got the split they needed in singles play to win the match. Secord was first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Miller at No. 1. Roberts swept past Pelton 6-2, 6-0 to win at No. 3 and Gandhi clinched the victory for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Harper.

St. John Fisher won the other three singles contests. McCullough outlasted Gordon in split sets at No. 2 singles 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Christman defeated Kiser 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and O'Connell downed Williard 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot.
