NCAA Outdoor Championship Preview

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's and women's track and field program is sending nine athletes to the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Calista Ariel, English Jackson, Tye Meador, Emily Valle, Diante Cannon, Alex Galloway, Jamie Hiegel, Dirk Jones and Davonta Womack will represent the Eagles in eight different events.

The ODAC as a whole will be represented by 15 athletes. It is the tenth time and most recent since 2015 that the conference as sent more than ten. The top eight athletes in each event at the meet will earn All-American honors.

Ariel will race in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the championships. Her qualifying time of 10:50.41 from the NCC Dr. Keeler Meet slots her at tenth in the field. Her time is the ODAC and Bridgewater College record in the event. The junior was named the ODAC Outdoor Athlete of the Meet at the conference championship after winning titles in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, 1,500 meter run and 5,000 meter run. This will be her third NCAA Championship this year after competing in the NCAA Cross Country Championship and the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Jackson will represent the Eagles in the 5,000 meters in her first nationals appearance. Her qualifying time of 17:19.08 slots her in the 22nd position. She recorded that mark at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier. The junior is the current ODAC Outdoor Champion in the 10,000 meters after a breakout year that included wins at Liberty and Elon in the 5,000 meters and setting a new Bridgewater record in the 10,000 meters (38:13.67).

Meador, the lone senior competing for Bridgewater on the women's side, makes her nationals debut in the long jump. The two-time ODAC outdoor champion has the tenth best mark entering the meet with her ODAC winning jump of 5.76m/18'10.75". She has consistently been among the top jumpers all season at meets with Division I competitors.

Valle, an indoor All-American in the 60 meter hurdles, will go for her second All-American nod this year in the 400 meter hurdles. She is slotted 13th with a qualifying time of 1:02.18 from the Phoenix Invitational where she took first place. The junior also broke the Bridgewater record in the 100 meter hurdles twice this season (14.77). She won ODAC outdoor titles this year in the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Cannon, Galloway, Jones and Womack is seeded ninth with a qualifying time of 41.16 from the ODAC Outdoor Championships. The quartet set the new school record and won the ODAC title at the meet. They also took first at the Phoenix Invitational.

Womack adds to the relay with two individual events on the hunt for his second All-American honor of the year and third of his career. His 100 meter dash qualifying time of 10.54 is seventh best entering the meet and his long jump mark of 7.24m/23'9" is 14th best. The senior was named the ODAC Outdoor Athlete of the Meet at the conference championship after winning titles in the 100 meter dash, long jump and the 4x100 - the three events he will be competing in Geneva. He also set new school records this season in the 100 meter dash (10.54) and 200 meter dash (21.62).

Hiegel rounds out the Eagle contingent in the longest event. His 10,000 meter Bridgewater record qualifying time of 30:07.63 is seventh best entering the meet. He won ODAC outdoor titles this year in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. The senior is making his first NCAA Outdoor Nationals appearance but his second championship appearance of the year after placing 59th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. He is the a two-time ODAC Runner of the Year in cross country.

The meet kicks off Thursday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio with the University of Mount Union and the Great Cleveland Sports Commission serving as hosts.

The Eagles events will take place at the times below. If they advance from the prelim round, they will move to the finals with a chance at earning All-American honors.
