Eagles Defeat Beloit, 13-8, To Split Thursday's Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Bridgewater softball squad split its two games Thursday, winning 13-8 over Beloit and dropping an 8-2 decision to Defiance.

The Eagles won a slugfest Thursday morning in the 13-8 victory over Beloit.

Bridgewater took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Brooke Louden reached on an infield single to keep the inning alive. Allison Patrick followed with a line drive double to center, scoring Louden for a 1-0 Eagles lead. Lindsey Talley singled to put runners at the corners and then Patrick and Talley pulled off a double-steal with Patrick scoring to give Bridgewater a 2-0 lead.

The margin didn't last long as Beloit responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second. Alex Kohn delivered the big hit with a two-run, two-out double to put the Buccaneers on top 3-2.

The Eagles added two runs in the top of the third to regain the lead. Mikalia Guard led off the frame with a single and Anna Patterson was hit by a pitch. Gaurd and Patterson moved up on a passed ball and another passed ball allowed Guard to cross the plate, tying the score at 3-3. Mariah Wharton walked to put runners at first and third and Lacey Shifflett followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Patterson to put the Eagles up 4-3.

Once again, the Buccaneers answered, this time scoring a single run in the bottom of the third to pull even at 4-4.

Bridgewater tacked on two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Patrick and Talley led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Patrick scored on a ground out by Victoria Gontarz and Talley later scored on a passed ball to put the Eagles up 6-4.

The Buccaneers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within 6-5, but the Eagles put four runs on the board in fifth to take a 10-5 lead. 

Shifflett led off the inning with a base hit and pinch-runner Hannah Nyquist moved to second on a passed ball. Louden then reached on an error with Nyquist advancing to third on the play. Nyquist scored on Patrick's sacrifice fly to put the Eagles on top 7-5. Talley reached on an infield hit to put two runners on and Guard cleared the bases with a three-run homer, giving Bridgewater a 10-5 lead.

Beloit battled back and a three-run bottom of the sixth trimmed the Eagles' lead to 10-8.

Bridgewater then scored three key insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-8 lead.

With one out in the seventh, Talley singled and she moved to third on a two-out single by Guard. Talley scored on a passed ball to make the score 11-8. After a walk to Patterson, a passed ball moved Gaurd to third and Patterson to second. Both runners scored on Wharton's fly ball to center, making the score 13-8.

Talley led Bridgewater's 14-hit attack with a 4-for-5 day at the plate and three runs scored. Guard was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Louden went the distance in the circle to pick up the win.

In Thursday's second game, Defiance scored a run in the first and two more in the second inning to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead over the Eagles. Michaela Bauer delivered the big blow in the second with a two-run double.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard with a run in the third inning. With two outs and no one on base, Talley reached on an infield error. She moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Nyquist to pull the Eagles to within 3-1.

The Yellow Jackets opened up some breathing room with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 advantage. Defiance tacked on two more runs in the sixth to increase its lead to 8-1.

Bridgewater scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Ryan Kirtner, making the final score 8-2.
