Softball Falls To Alverno, Dominates Mitchell

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bridgewater College softball team dropped a heartbreaker for their first loss of the season to Alverno, but bounced back with a convincing win over Mitchell.

Game One: Bridgewater 5, Alverno 6

Alverno got on the board first with an RBI double from Carina Jimenez for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bridgewater answered quickly with a Sarah Wimer homer in the top of the second to even things up at one run a piece.

Mikalia Guard singled through the left side in the third inning. She would advance to second on an error in left field, giving Avery Pinder the path to home plate and an Eagle lead of 2-1.

Wimer drove a single to center field and earned an RBI with it as Guard would score for the 3-1 advantage in the fifth. Katrina Martin hit a 2 RBI double down the left field line in the sixth to send Guard and Morgan Landes home.

Bridgewater led 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. Alverno took control after that, scoring two runs in that inning and three more in the seventh for the walk-off and comeback win.

Carolyn Campbell pitched the first six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. Guard and Wimer led the Eagles with two hits. Martin and Wimer added two RBIs each.

Game Two:

The Eagles got off to a strong start in game two, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Freshman Torie Shifflett hit a double to lead off the Eagles. Guard followed it up with a single, allowing Shifflett to advance to third. Martin would hit a single of her own to send Shifflett home for the Eagles first run.

With Guard at second and Martin at first, Guard was able to run home and Martin advance to third on an error by the centerfielder. Wimer then hit a single to send Martin home and put the Eagles up 3-0.

Still in the first, Ryann Crennan hit a 3 RBI double on a line drive, pushing the Bridgewater lead to 6-0. The sophomore advanced to third on a wild pitch and eventually home as Allison Patrick grounded out for the innings second out.

Shifflett, in her second at bat of the inning, hit her second double of the day on a line drive to left field. Kaitlyn Tirona hit an RBI line drive double of her on the next at bat to send Shifflett home for an 8-0 lead.

Patrick started the third inning with a single to left field. The Mitchell pitcher walked Shifflett and allowed Taylor Novak a single to send Patrick home for the Eagles ninth run.

Guard delivered a big 3 RBI home run in her third at bat to increase the Eagles lead to 12-0.

Martin was at bat next and reached first on an error by the third baseman. The sophomore advanced to second on a Wimer single and eventually home on a ground out fielder's choice by Carlita Tibbs.  

Tibbs ran home on a Crennan single, pushing the score to 14-0.

Patrick hit a sacrifice fly to center field as Brooke Louden came home to make it 15-0. Another RBI single from Novak made it 16-0 and an error by the shortstop sent Sydney Layman in for a 17-0 Eagle lead.

The Eagles weren't done yet. Marlee Carroll reached home off an error by the shortstop on a hit from Louden. Crennan then hit a sacrifice fly to send Tibbs home and add run 19 to board and seal an Eagle win in five innings.

Wimer led the Eagles with three hits. Shifflett, Novak, Tibbs, Crennan, and Patrick all added two. Crennan totaled five RBIs with Guard contributing three.

Louden pitched all five innings for the win while allowing four hits.

The Eagles are 7-1 on the season and are back for two more games tomorrow. They start the day at 11:15 against Bates followed by a 1:30 start against Carthage.
