ATLANTA, Ga. - No. 16 Oglethorpe jumped out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter Sunday afternoon and the Stormy Petrels led the rest of the way in a 73-53 victory over Bridgewater College.
The Eagles made just 2-of-15 shots in the opening quarter as the hosts took a double-digit lead. The first-quarter shooting was a sign of things to come for the Eagles as they connected on just 22.1 percent from the field in Sunday's game.
The Petrels took their biggest lead of the first half, 39-19, with 4:28 left, but the Eagles continued to battle. Bridgewater scored the final four points of the first half on a layup by Mary Ruth Shifflett and two free throws by Ahlia Moone to trim the deficit to 15 points, 43-28, at the break.
Bridgewater was unable to cut into the margin in the third quarter as cold-shooting continued to plague the team. The Eagles hits just 3-of-16 shot attempts as Oglethorpe extended its lead to 58-37 entering the final quarter.
Oglethorpe, now 11-1, featured balanced scoring as Taylor Smith, Nikki Reed and Savannah LeGate each finished with 12 points.
Bridgewater, now 2-7 on the season, had strong production from its bench as reserves scored 36 of the team's 53 points. Jasmyn Pierce came off the bench to lead the team with 12 points and Moone added 10.
Both teams struggled with turnovers with the Eagles committing 30 turnovers while Oglethorpe turned the ball over 25 times.
Bridgewater returns to action Monday at LaGrange College. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
