Shenandoah Holds Off Eagles, 1-0

Shenandoah Holds Off Eagles, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Shenandoah University got on the board in the first seven minutes of play Wednesday afternoon and the one goal turned out to be enough as the Hornets blanked Bridgewater College, 1-0, in a key conference matchup.

The Hornets entered the game just ahead of the Eagles in the conference standings and the victory Wednesday gives Shenandoah the edge in pursuing a top-four seed for the ODAC tournament. The Hornets are now 5-1-1 in the conference while the Eagles drop to 4-2.

Shenandoah got on the board when the Eagles were unable to clear the ball out of their defensive end. Hornets midfielder Danielle Burris gained possession of the ball and lofted a shot with her left foot toward the far post from 25 yards out. Bridgewater keeper Taylor Riley tried to punch the ball away but it glanced off her hand and into the net to put Shenandoah on the board at the 6:46 mark.

The Eagles managed just three shots in the opening half, but turned up the offensive pressure in the final 45 minutes. The Eagles held a 7-4 edge in shots in the second half and put four shots on frame, but Hornets keeper Erin Septer was up to the task and recorded four saves.

For the game, the Hornets held a slim 11-10 edge in shots and each team finished with three corner kicks.

Bridgewater returns to action Saturday when the Eagles travel to play nationally-ranked Lynchburg College.
