BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team will play its annual cancer awareness game on Oct. 20 when the Eagles host Roanoke College.
This year's game will be played in support of local youngster Sam Whetzel who was diagnosed earlier this year with leukemia. Sam is 11 years old, he and his twin brother Joe create all sorts of clever figures and inventions. Sam runs very fast and enjoys visiting a nearby arboretum with his family. "Calvin and Hobbes" and "Big Nate" are two of his favorite comics.
This past summer, a virus circulated through Sam's extended family. The virus lasted for about a week with most family members, but Sam was unable to shake the virus. Sam went to see a doctor and that's when the family received the diagnosis.
Sam is currently undergoing treatments and the prognosis is good. The Bridgewater's women's soccer team is selling t-shirts in support of Sam and all proceeds will go to benefit him and his family. Shirts are available through the team and the coaching staff at a cost of $10. To purchase a shirt, contact head coach Mike Van Horn at 540-828-5409, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
