BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Washington and Lee Generals put a goal on the board in each half Wednesday afternoon to defeat Bridgewater College 2-1 in women's soccer action.
The contest was the final regular season match for each squad. The Eagles complete the regular season with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 7-4-1 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. W&L is now 15-2-1 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
Bridgewater will have the No. 6 seed for the conference tournament and will travel to Virginia Wesleyan (9-3 in the ODAC) for a quarterfinal contest Saturday. Official pairings and game times will be released by the conference office.
The Generals got on the board midway through the opening half when Tricia Jessie took a pass from Holley Beasley and chipped a shot over the head of Bridgewater keeper Taylor Riley for a 1-0 W&L lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the Generals struck again early in the second half. Lauren Abraham hit a low shot from inside the box and snuck it past Riley just inside the post to make the score 2-0 at the 46:29 mark.
Bridgewater answered with its goal in the 51st minute. Julia Baca took a pass from Sarah Conner and slid a shot to the far post past W&K keeper Addie Healey, pulling the Eagles to within a single goal.
The Generals defense kept the Eagles at bay for the remainder of the contest to secure the 2-1 victory.
W&L held a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Riley finished the contest with six saves while Healey recorded two saves for the Generals.
