ASHLAND, Va. - Bridgewater College senior Bailey Kratz scored on a penalty kick late in the first overtime Saturday to lift the Eagles to a key 1-0 victory over Randolph-Macon in a matchup of two teams ranked in the South Atlantic Region poll.
The loss was the first of the season for the Yellow Jackets and the goal was just the second allowed by Randolph-Macon this season. Washington and Lee scored against the Yellow Jackets earlier this season in a 1-1 tie.
The Eagles entered the contest ranked No. 6 in the region in the United Soccer Coaches poll with the Yellow Jackets ranked No. 7. In the first NCAA rankings of the season, Randolph-Macon was ranked No. 4 in the region while the Eagles checked in at No. 8.
Shots and scoring opportunities were hard to come by as the defenses controlled the play. Randolph-Macon held a 15-10 edge in total shots, but the Yellow Jackets put just four shots on frame as Eagles' goalkeeper Sydney Davis finished the game with four saves. The Yellow Jackets also had the edge in corner kicks by a 9-4 margin.
The Eagles scored the game-winning goal following a Randolph-Macon corner kick. Bridgewater defended the corner and countered quickly with a long pass ahead to Kratz. Kratz touched the ball ahead and carried the ball into the box where she took a shot that was blocked by a defender. The ball bounced back to Kratz and she took another shot toward the far post and a defender was called for a hand ball, awarding the Eagles the penalty shot in the 108th minute.
Kratz stroked her attempt past the keeper for her sixth goal of the season to give the Eagles the 1-0 victory.
With the victory Bridgewater improved to 13-2-1 overall and, more importantly, 6-1-1 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets drop to 9-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in conference play.
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday night when they travel to Winchester, Va., to play Shenandoah University. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
