Eagles Get Shot At Undefeated Yellow Jackets in ODAC Semis

Cyan Coates hits winning shot vs. Roanoke

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Roanoke in the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals, Bridgewater College will travel to Ashland, Va., on Saturday for a semifinal matchup against the undefeated Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.

Saturday will mark the third straight year the Eagles have advanced to at least the semifinal round of the conference tournament.

The Eagles defeated Roanoke in the quarters when Cyan Coates gathered in the ball near midfield, dribbled to the top of the box where she eluded the final defender and then hit her shot just inside the far post to propel Bridgewater to the 2-1 victory.

Bridgewater scored first when Hanna Randolph sent a ball into the middle of the box. Sydney Ryan took the ball out of the air and volleyed a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the first half. Roanoke tied the score in the 59th minute on a goal by Kathryn Van Orden.

Randolph-Macon was tied with Lynchburg 1-1 midway through the second half in its quarterfinal before a three-goal barrage in less than five minutes sent the Yellow Jackets to a 4-1 victory. Gabby Nelson, the ODAC's leading scorer, scored two goals and added an assist to lead Randolph-Macon to the victory.

Saturday's semifinal should be a closely contested match as the two most recent contests between the teams have been decided by one goal. A year ago, Bridgewater defeated the Yellow Jackets 1-0 on a penalty kick in overtime. This year, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Eagles 1-0 on a goal in the final three minutes of regulation.

"We realize we have a big challenge in front of us, but we're excited for the opportunity to play in the semifinals," said Bridgewater head coach Mike Van Horn.
