FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team opened its fall season Saturday with several players competing at the ITA Regionals hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
Holly Knupp picked up the lone Bridgewater win as she defeated St. Mary's Kayla Baier in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles flight.
Two Eagles saw action in the No. 3 singles flight. Stephanie Barton lost her match 6-3, 6-4 to Goucher's Alice Goldstein-Plesser while Whitney Cash dropped her match in split sets to Moravian's Courtney Lambert. After losing the first set 6-3, Cash evened the match by taking the second set 6-4. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Lambert prevailing 10-4.
In No. 4 singles play, Shannon Quinn lost to Susquehanna's Taylor Cooper 6-2, 6-3.
Leanne Smithers lost a tough split-set decision to Susquehanna's Valerie Gapko in the No. 6 flight. Smithers took the opening set 6-3, but lost the second set 6-2. Gapko edged Smithers in the tiebreaker 11-9.
At No. 7 singles, Bridgewater's Caroline Edwards dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Hollins' Neha Batool.
In doubles play, Cash and Barton went 1-1 in No. 1 doubles flight action. The Eagles duo lost their first match to Grove City's Maggie Manchester and Karolina Lagerquist 8-5. The pair then won their first match in consolations, defeating Hollins' Courtney Ahmed and Renata DiDonato.
