Eagles Drop Close 5-4 Match To Sweet Briar

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team lost a close 5-4 decision to Sweet Briar on Friday morning in the final match of the team's spring break trip.

The Eagles defaulted matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The teams split the two contested doubles matches, giving Sweet Briar a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Bridgewater's Stephanie Barton and Whitney Cash turned back Gina Rutledge and AJ Lukanuski 8-5 to win the at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, Sweet Briar's Samantha Yew and Anna Colvin held off Bridgewater's Shannon Quinn and Ashley Price, 8-5.

The Vixens needed a split in singles to win the match and wins at No. 1 and No. 4 along with the default at No. 6 provided Sweet Briar the necessary points to claim the team victory.

The Eagles picked up victories in singles at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5.

Price stopped Rutledge in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 two in at No. 2 while Cash slipped by Colvin 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to take the victory at No. 3 singles. Bridgewater's Haley Lloyd downed Megan Johnston 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Sweet Brian's Lukanuski claimed a close victory over Barton at the No. 1 flight, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Yew took a split set decision from Quinn to win at No. 4 singles. Yew took the opening set 7-5, but Quinn evened the match by taking the second set 6-3. A tiebreaker was then played to decide the outcome with Yew winning by a score of 10-0.

Bridgewater is back in action Sunday afternoon when the Eagles host Guilford College for an ODAC contest.
