Eagles Defeat Hollins On Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team celebrated its Senior Day with a 7-2 victory Wednesday over Hollins in an ODAC match played on Mapp Courts.

The Eagles swept the doubles action to take a 3-0 and then won the final four singles flights to clinch the victory.

Bridgewater's Stephanie Barton and Whitney Cash put the Eagles on the board with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Gaelin McLeod and Wibecka Oliver.

Ashley Price and Shannon Quinn took the win at No. 2 doubles for the Eagles, defeating Jhovanna Salmeron and Htet Myat San, 8-4.

The Eagles completed the sweep as Haley Lloyd and Holly Knupp held off Neha Batool and Amelia Verkerk at N0. 3 doubles by a score of 8-5.

McLeod put Hollins on the board when she defeated Barton 6-2, 6-3 to win the No. 1 singles flight.

Lloyd was the first BC player to post a singles win as she blanked Elizabeth Rochow 6-0, 6-0 to win at No. 6. Cash then clinched the team victory for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 over Oliver.

Quinn stopped Batool at No. No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-3 and Knupp won at No. 3 by stopping Verkirk 6-2, 6-3.

Hollins picked up its final point at No. 2 where Salmeron edged Price in split sets. Price won the first set 6-2, but Salmeron battled back to win the second set 7-6, taking the tiebreaker by a 9-7 score. A tiebreaker was then played to determine the match winner with Salmeron prevailing 10-8.
