Randolph Hands Eagles Tough 5-4 Loss

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Randolph College in ODAC women's tennis action on Saturday.

The Eagles narrowly missed sweeping the doubles play, but settled for a 2-1 lead. The teams split two matches that were decided by tiebreakers. The Eagles took the point at No. 1 doubles where Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett slipped past Keyu Jin and Ashley Schmitz 8-7 (7-2). The WildCats won at No. 3 when Hayley Ashford and Ranita Opoku-Sarfo edged Alexia Will and Emily Daigneault 8-7 (7-3). At No. 2 doubles, Bridgewater's Stephanie Barton and Rachel Crawford downed Savana Mata and Sarah Mueller 8-5.

The WildCats took points at the top two singles flights. Jin turned back Kiser 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 while Schmitz defeated Shifflett 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

The Eagles claimed points in the middle two singles flights. Barton stopped Mata at No. 3 singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-4 and Crawford rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Opoku-Sarfo at No. 4.

Randolph won the final two flights to win the match. At No. 6 singles, Jordon Kirkpatrick defeated Bridgewater's Will 6-4, 6-1. The match at No. 5 singles was a marathon, three-setter with Randolph's Kristyn Underwood outlasting Daigneault 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
