Eagles Slip Past E&H, 5-4

ROANOKE, Va. - Bridgewater took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and added wins in the top three singles flights to edge Emory & Henry, 5-4, in ODAC women's tennis action played Saturday on the Hollins University courts.

Emory & Henry put the first point in the books when Tessa Johnston and Callie Pollard rolled to an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Bridgewater's Alexia Will and Caroline Edwards.

The Eagles evened the match as Stephanie Barton and Rachel Crawford defeated Katie Meade and Kaitlyn Sheaves 8-3 to take the point at No. 1 doubles. Bridgewater picked up a key point to take the lead in the match when Whitney Kiser and Emily Daigneault held off Vanna Summers and Logan Graham 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

The Eagles 2-1 lead evaporated quickly as the Wasps took the first two singles points with wins at the No. 6 and No. 4 slots. Johnston blanked Edwards 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot and Graham turned back Will 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, giving E&H a 3-2 edge in the team score.

Kiser pulled Bridgewater even with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over Meade, but the Wasps forged back ahead with a 6-3, 6-0 win by Bri Pierce over Daigneault at the No. 5 position.

Bridgewater won the final two matches on the court to take the victory. Crawford tied the score with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Summers at No. 3 singles. Barton provided the winnng point with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over Sheaves.

The Eagles are back in action Sunday afternoon when they host Virginia Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
