Marlins Rally In Singles To Defeat Eagles

Nicole Shifflett returns a shot

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan controlled singles play Sunday to rally for a 6-3 victory over Bridgewater College in ODAC women's tennis action played on Mapp Courts.

Bridgewater led 2-1 at the completion of the doubles matches. Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett put the Eagles on the board with an 8-3 win over Audrey Bally and Katie Staman at No. 1 doubles. Stephanie Barton and Rachel Crawford added the point at No. 2 with an 8-5 victory over Lyric Hinton and Christine Zalameda.

The Marlins salvaged a doubles point at No. 3 where Taylor Witherspoon and Aubree Johnson held off Emily Daigneault and Caroline Edwards 8-6.
 
Virginia Wesleyan won five of the six singles contest to take the victory.
 
Hinton was first off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Will in the No.5 singles match. The Marlins' Witherspoon took the point at No. 4 over Crawford, winning 6-1, 6-0. Virginia Wesleyan's Tatum O'Brien added the point at No. 6, defeating Daigneault 6-2, 6-1. Bally claimed the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles over Shifflett. Staman was awarded the point at No. 3 singles when Bridgewater's Barton was forced to retire in the second set.
 
Kiser earned the Eagles' lone singles victory with a 6-3, 6-4.triumph over Zalameda at the No. 1 slot.
