BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Volleyball team opened ODAC play with a 3-0 victory over Roanoke College on Wednesday night.
The Eagles came out strong from the start and took a commanding 19-8 lead behind service runs from Taylor McNeely and Jenna Hamra. Roanoke slowly crept up to within seven points of the Eagles, but Rachel Gaston finished the set with a kill to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams were never more than three points from each other. It was down to the wire at 23-23, but kills from Gaston and Lindsey Olzawski put the Eagles one set closer to victory.
Roanoke built a lead at the beginning of the third and held the advantage all set long until 22-20. Bridgewater only allowed the Maroons to score one more point as Deja Booker, Victoria Wilson, and Gaston all contributed kills to win 25-23. In the end, it was the Eagles energy and persistence that earned them the set and the match.
Gaston led the Eagles with 17 kills and 16 digs, the junior's seventh double-double of the season. Nadia Valle had a strong showing recording seven kills with only one error. Hamra and McNeely controlled the back line with 15 and 13 digs, respectively, while Wilson fed the Eagle hitters for 33 assists adding 11 digs.
The Eagles will have a week break thanks to Hurricane Florence before they travel to Lynchburg to face the Hornets on September 19.
