SALEM, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team picked up their twelfth win of the season in a thrilling five sets over Roanoke.
The first set was dictated by the service game from both teams. There were five total service errors and five aces in the first set alone. The Eagles were able to pull away late in the set behind kills from Rachel Gaston and Lisa O'Grady. Emily Hanger sealed the set with a kill to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Bridgewater controlled set two from the start only allowing Roanoke to score 11 points.
Roanoke bounced back in set three, pushing the set to extra points. The Maroons battled to a 32-30 set win and continued the momentum to take set four and tie the match at 2-2.
The Eagles started the fifth set down 0-4, but quickly tied the game 4-4 in a stretch that featured two kills from O'Grady. Sarah Kerns picked up two kills on two slide attacks to swing the energy back to Bridgewater. Kerns would end the match with a kill to give the Eagles the hard fought victory.
Grace Hayes led a balanced offense and picked up 50 assists. Her top three hitters were all within two kills of each other. Gaston led the team with 15 kills to go with an impressive 26 digs, followed by O'Grady with 14 kills and Kerns with 13. O'Grady also assisted on five blocks while Hanger contributed to six. Libero Taylor McNeely kept the ball alive with 22 digs and served up three aces.
With the win, Bridgewater remains undefeated on the season. The team will travel to Southern Virginia for a match on Friday, September 20. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
