HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team defeated crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) on Wednesday night in Harrisonburg to stay perfect in ODAC competition.
The Eagles jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set. Taylor McNeely then helped Bridgewater make it 18-9 from behind the service line. Rachel Gaston ended the first with one of her five kills in the set.
Gaston had four kills in the first 11 plays of the second to give Bridgewater a 9-2 advantage. The Royals made a run mid-set and pushed it to 21-23, but two Royal errors sealed the set in Bridgewater's favor. McNeely continued to prove why she's one of the top servers in the ODAC with two aces and 13 total serves in the set.
Bridgewater regained control of the match at the start of the third and hit a .400 as a team. Emily Hanger sealed the 3-0 win with back-to-back aces.
Gaston hit a .371 and collected a match high 16 kills. The senior now has 998 career kills. Hope Jennings hit a .451 for five kills on 11 attempts. McNeely not only impressed from the service line, but picked up a match high 21 digs. Grace Hayes had 29 assists.
With the win, the Eagles move to 18-1 on the season. The team will travel to Hood College on Saturday, October 11 for a tri-match with the Blazers and the Arcadia Knights.
