BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Rachel Gaston led the Bridgewater College volleyball team with 16 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Emory & Henry Thursday night.
Bridgewater jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first, but slowly saw it fade as Emory & Henry pushed the score to 10-9. After an Eagles timeout, Bridgewater regained focused behind strong service runs from Hope Jennings and Taylor McNeely. The Wasps only scored two points after the timeout while facing four kills from Gaston and two from Emily Hanger.
The Eagles found themselves with another big lead in the beginning of the second set. The Wasps were able to get within one point at 14-13 until Bridgewater went on a 11-4 run to secure the set on a Grace Hayes ace.
Bridgewater dominated the third set from the start, hitting a .409 while holding Emory & Henry to a -.036.
Gaston's 16 kills were a match high for the senior. Emily Hanger, Jennings and Madison Haynes all had five kills. Jessica Bissmeyer had a match high 13 digs followed by McNeely with 10. Hayes had 28 asissts.
With the win, Bridgewater moves to 23-5 and 9-4 in the ODAC. The Eagles will likely be the fourth seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament and will host a first round game on November 6. The team has one more match at home on Saturday, November 2 against Marymount to close out the regular season. The game will serve as Bridgewater's It's On Us match. The mission of It's On Us is to combat college sexual assault by changing campus culture. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
