Box Score Conference-leading Randolph-Macon College outscored Bridgewater
College 12-3 in the final two minutes Tuesday night to escape with
a 61-53 victory over the Eagles at Nininger Hall.
Bridgewater scored the first six points of the game and never
trailed in the first half.
In fact Randolph-Macon, ranked No. 18 in the Division III poll, did
not lead until Nicole Childress knocked down a 3-pointer to give
the Yellow Jackets a 40-37 lead with 6:44 left in the game.
The Eagles answered with a 3-pointer by Jordan Burkholder to tie
the score and then regained the lead, 42-40, on Nikki
Sydnor's layup with 5:50 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets tied the score on Marta Merkel's jumper
and then went on top, 43-40, when Jess Shifflett hit 1-of-2 at the
line.
Randolph-Macon held the upper hand until a layup by Rebecca
Henderson gave BC a 50-49 lead with 2:01 to play.
Molly Arial scored the next five points to put the Yellow Jackets
out front to stay, and down the stretch the visitors hit 7-of-8
free throws to clinch the victory.
Burkholder was the only Bridgewater player in double-figures with a
game-high 24 points. Sydnor score eight points and pulled down 10
boards while Henderson added eight rebounds and four blocked
shots.
Arial scored 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the
Yellow Jackets. Amanda Hilunen scored 11 points while teammates
Shifflett and Childress scored 10 each.
Bridgewater is now 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the ODAC while the Yellow
Jackets improve to 15-1, 10-1 in the ODAC.
