Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Washington and Lee grabbed a two-goal lead and then held off the Bridgewater College Eagles for a 2-1 victory in an ODAC quarterfinal matchup.
The Eagles had a good opportunity at the 8:00 mark when Melanie Waters had a one-on-one chance against Generals keeper Emily Leary. Leary, W&L's All-American keeper, was able to get a hand on the Waters shot to record a key early save.
Washington and Lee, the defending ODAC champion, grabbed the early advantage at the 14:54 mark when Taylor Garrett headed in a cross from Kat Barnes to put the Generals on the board.
The Generals led 1-0 at the half and then took advantage of a Bridgewater miscue to pad the lead.
Barnes blasted in a shot from 15 yards after the Eagles failed to clear the ball out of the box, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead at the 47:55 mark.
Roughly a minute later the Eagles answered to make it a one-goal game. Waters talled the goal when her shot bounced off post and landed just past the goal line, making the score 2-1.
The Eagles were able to pressure the Generals defense several times during the remainder of the half, but were unable to score the tying goal as W&L advanced to the semifinal round.
W&L finished with a 9-8 edge in shots while the Eagles held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Leary tallied four saves while Shauna Manovich finished with three saves for the Eagles.
Bridgewater finishes the year with a 9-8-1 record, the program's second straight winning season. W&L is now 10-5-2 on the season.
