Field Hockey Downs Roanoke 7-2 on Senior Day; Waddell Sets Single Season Wins Mark

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Senior Day at Mapp Field, the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team scored four first half goals before cruising to a 7-2 victory over the Roanoke Maroons in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. With the victory, junior Taylor Waddell set the single season wins record for a goalie with her ninth win of the year.

Bridgewater (9-3, 3-1 ODAC) got on the board at the 6:55 mark, when a Colleen Dickson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) shot found the back of the cage to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 early.

Ten minutes later, sophomore Joan Burleson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) took a Jennifer Bateman (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) pass and beat the Roanoke goalie to put Bridgewater ahead 2-0.

Less than three minutes later, Bateman tallied a goal of her own off of a Kalah Hess (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) helper to put Bridgewater up 3-0.

The Eagles finalized the first half of scoring when senior Kristen Combs (Schuyler, Va./Monticello) took a Brianna Jacques (Orange, Va./Orange) pass and beat the keeper to put Bridgewater up 4-0 which is where the game would stay as the contest headed to halftime.

Six minutes into the second half, Jacques found the back of the net to put Bridgewater up 5-0. Hess assisted on the Jacques goal.

Roanoke finally got on the board just under two minutes later when Lianna Hachborn beat Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) to cut the Eagles lead to 5-1.

Fifty-nine seconds later, Kelly Ryan (Richmond, Va./Matoaca) pushed the Bridgewater lead back to five goals at a 6-1 tally, before Combs netted her second goal of the game at the 62:42 mark to put Bridgewater up by a 7-1 score.

The Maroons finalized the scoring with under two minutes to play when Abby Bjork took a Lee Sheldon pass off a corner and beat Waddell to make the score 7-2 which is where the game would end.

Combs' pair of tallies gives her 10 goals on the year.

Hess' trio of assists matched her career high from the 2008 season, while Jacques' three-point outing puts her in third place on the Bridgewater career points list with 87.

In the cage, Waddell turned away seven Roanoke scoring attempts to record her ninth win of the year.

Roanoke's keepers split time in the cage in the loss. Cristina Schicilione recorded the loss, allowing all four first-half Bridgewater goals. Katherine Muhvich allowed three goals for the Maroons in the loss.

Bridgewater outshot the Maroons by a 21-9 tally.

Prior to the game, the Eagles honored their six seniors.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, October 13 when they travel to Washington and Jefferson. Action from W&J begins at 7:00 p.m.
