Box Score EMORY, Va. - Emory & Henry College (6-15,
5-11 ODAC) struck first, but the Bridgewater Eagles answered with a
6-0 run to take the lead and never looked back as BC held off a
late Wasps run to pick up a 79-73 Old Dominion Athletic Conference
(ODAC) victory.
Bridgewater (15-7, 11-6 ODAC) junior Jordan Burkholder knocked down
a career-high 31 points to lead the Eagles to their eighth win in
their last nine games.
Emory & Henry netted the first bucket of the game with 19:00
minutes to go in the first half to take a 2-0 lead before the
Eagles answered in a big way.
BC put together an incredible 33-8 run over the next 13 minutes to
build a 33-10 lead with under seven minutes left in the opening
stanza following a pair of Bianca Booker free throws.
For the remainder of the half, it was the Wasps chipping away at
the Eagles' lead, bringing it down to as low as 13 before heading
into the intermission, trailing Bridgewater by a 43-27 tally.
Bridgewater shot as fiery 48% from the field in the first half
while the Eagles held Emory & Henry to a cold 28% shooting over
the first 20 minutes.
At the onset of the second half, Emory & Henry caught fire and
used a 16-4 run over the first seven plus minutes to cut
Bridgewater's lead to a meager 47-43 advantage with 12:14
remaining.
Four points was as low as the BC lead would get though before the
Eagles eventually pulled away to a 74-59 lead with two and a half
minutes left in regulation.
Emory & Henry made one last ditch run at the Eagles, cutting
the BC lead to six on two occasions in the final minute, but
efficient free throw shooting from Bridgewater allowed the Eagles
to eventually prevail by a 79-73 score.
Burkholder led all scorers with 31 on the afternoon. The
Bridgewater,Va. native scored a dozen of her 31 points from the
charity stripe, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. Jenny Logan
chipped in an additional 12, while junior Emileigh Lambert netted
10. The trio each pulled down a team-high seven boards.
The two teams shot a combined 55 free throws on the day, with
Bridgewater knocking in 24-of-28 from the line.
Emory & Henry was led by Christina Howard's 18-point
performance. Alex Lyons led the Wasps on the glass with seven
rebounds.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday, February 16 when the
Eagles travel to Lynchburg. Tip-off against the Hornets is slated
for 7:00 p.m.
