Nationally-ranked Emory holds off Eagles, 2-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Nationally-ranked Emory University slipped past Bridgewater College, 2-1, Saturday at the Mary Washington Women's Soccer Classic.

Emory, ranked No. 21 in Division III, scored first on a Sara Belsole goal at the 34:04 mark. Emory ecpanded its lead in the second half when Veronica Romero floated a shot into the net in the 56th minute for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles cut the margin to 2-1 in the 75th minute when Melanie Waters (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake Senior) scored off an assist from Meghan Groos (Linden, Va./Warren County), but Emory kept the Eagles off the board in the final 15 minutes to preserve the victory.

Emory held a 13-3 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Bridgewater goalkeeper Cari Hensley (Danville, Va./George Washington) finished the contest with five saves.

The Eagles return to action Sunday afternoon when they play Mary Washington.
