Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon wiped out a four-point halftime deficit with a dominating second-half performance and pulled away for a 75-49 victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles in ODAC action Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles went toe-to-toe with the 11th-ranked Yellow Jackets in the first half and led by as many as seven points. With the score tied at 13, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead. Rick Maloney's jumper put the Eagles ahead before a 3-pointer by Cody Griffith pushed the margin to five, 18-13. Danny Jones scored inside for Randolph-Macon, but Daniel McClain answered with a short jumper along the baseline and Kyle Hammond scored on a layup to give the Eagles a 22-15 lead with 8:25 left in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets answered the Eagles with a 6-0 run to pull within one, but the Eagles maintained the lead until two foul shots by Jones tied the score at 24-24.
The Jackets went on top 30-29 when Jordan Brown hit 1-of-2 foul shots with 3:10 left but that turned out to be the final point of the first half for the Yellow Jackets. The Eagles regained the lead on a layup by Maloney and then Rashad Moore hit 1-of-2 from the foul line to make the score 32-30. Justin Brake hit a pair of free throws with six second left in the half, giving Bridgewater a 34-30 lead at the break.
The tone was set early in the second half as the Eagles turned the ball over on their first three trips. At that point, however, the Yellow Jackets failed to take advantage as the Eagles maintained the lead. Bridgewater hit just one bucket in the first four minutes of the second half - a layup by Drew Maynard on the break - but several free throws and some missed opportunities by the Jackets kept the Eagles out front. A free throw by Maloney gave BC a five-point, 38-33, lead with 16 minutes left before a 14-0 run turned the game around for Randolph-Macon.
A jumper by Lamar Giggetts and two free throws each by Jones and Adam Desgain gave the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead, 39-38. Desgain added a 3-pointer for a four-point lead and then both teams went scoreless for almost three minutes until Brandon Braxton hit a short jumper for a 44-38 Randolph-Macon lead. Eric Pugh knocked down a 3-pointer and Brandon scored from in close, making the score 49-38.
Moore finally broke the Bridgewater scoring drought that lasted more than six minutes when he hit a jumper, making the score 49-40 with 9:51 left to play.
The Jackets then broke the game open with a 16-2 run to take a 65-42 lead with 5:50 left in the game.
Bridgewater shot just 15.4 percent in the second half, making just four of its 26 shot attempts.
Maloney and Griffith each scored 11 points for the Eagles while Maloney also added 10 boards. The Jackets placed four players in double figures with Braxton leading the way with 17 points. Jones scored 14 while Desgain and Giggetts each finished with 13.
Bridgewater is now 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon improves to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC.
