Solid Defensive Effort Leads Eagles to 49-39 Win at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. – In its third game in four days, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team turned up the defensive intensity and turned 28 Mary Baldwin miscues into a 27-10 advantage as the Eagles notched a 49-39 victory over the Squirrels at the Physical Activities Center.

Bridgewater scored the first bucket of the game before Mary Baldwin responded with a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead with 16:45 to play in the first half.

Following Mary Baldwin's mini-run, the Eagles responded with seven unanswered points of the lead to take a 9-5 lead midway through the opening stanza.

Bridgewater's defense used a trapping midcourt press to baffle the Squirrels in the latter part of the half, as the Eagles pushed their lead to as high as eight at a 19-11 tally with six and change to go in the opening frame.

Both teams traded scores over the final six minutes of the frame with the Eagles hanging on to a 23-18 lead at the intermission

A scrappy Bridgewater defense was outstanding in the first half, turning 16 miscues into a 12-to-2 advantage in points off of turnovers to help the Eagles to a five-point lead into the break.

Out of the intermission, Bridgewater used a 13-2 run to extend its lead to a game-high 16 points at a 36-20 margin with 11:10 to play.

Mary Baldwin responded with a 10-2 run of its own to chip the lead to a meager six points at a 36-30 margin with eight and change to play.

Down the stretch, the Eagles emptied the bench and traded scores with the host Squirrels as Bridgewater eventually rolled to a 49-39 victory.

Junior Jessica Mullen paced three Eagles in double figures with a game-high 14 points. Senior Jenny Logan pitched in 11 in the win and a game-high 11 rebounds to post the double-double. Junior Katelynn Hottinger knocked in a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double as well to help pace the Eagles which at a 37.9% clip on the evening.

Mary Baldwin was paced by a nine-point effort from guard Shanice Miles. Bridgewater's defense held Mary Baldwin to a 29.4% clip from the field.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Frostburg State. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
