BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In a pivotal Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) field hockey matchup at Mapp Field, the visiting Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets scored three second-half goals to upend the Bridgewater Eagles by a 3-1 tally on Tuesday afternoon.
The matchup was a battle for second place in the ODAC, with the Yellow Jackets (6-7, 4-0 ODAC) entering the day with a half-game lead over the Eagles in the conference standings.
Bridgewater (6-6, 3-2 ODAC) got on the board early in the opening half of play when Colleen Dickson took a hard shot and put it to the opposite side pipe and got the shot past the keeper to put the Eagles ahead by a 1-0 tally at the 5:52 mark.
Randolph-Macon took over play following the Bridgewater goal but couldn't find the back of the cage as the Eagles maintained a one-goal lead.
The Eagles looked to add to their lead in the middle part of the opening frame with a three-shot barrage but Yellow Jackets' goalie Nicole Woodworth rejected each attempt to keep the Bridgewater lead at a 1-0 gap which is how it would remain at the intermission.
Both teams were dead even across the first 35 minutes of play with seven shots each. Bridgewater owned a 5-to-4 edge in corners in the opening half.
Randolph-Macon wasted little time in netting the equalizer when Rachael Gardner took a pass from Carrie Jacobs and beat the Bridgewater keeper to tie the game up at a goal each just 41 ticks into the second half of play.
The Yellow Jackets gained the lead 16 minutes later off of a Catherine Pricone goal, before adding an insurance goal at the 59:52 mark to finalize the scoring at a 3-1 margin.
After the final whistle, both teams remained even in shots with 15 each.
Bridgewater was paced offensively by Dickson's tally and a five-shot effort from freshman Taylor Prillaman.
Junior netminder Jessica Balsano picked up the loss, recording nine saves along the way.
Randolph-Macon was paced offensively by the play of Jacobs. The reigning ODAC Player of the Week dished out an assist and tallied four shots in the win.
Woodworth was stellar in the cage for the Yellow Jackets turning away 10 shots to earn the victory.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday at Mapp Field against St. Mary's (Md.). Saturday's matchup also marks Senior Day for seniors Kelly Ryan and Joan Burleson. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
