Women's Basketball Falls at Catholic, 46-41

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite shooting just 21% from the floor on the evening, the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team held a lead late in the second half but couldn't hold off unbeaten Catholic (4-0) down the stretch in a 46-41 non-conference loss on Monday evening at the DuFour Center.

In a slow start from both teams, Catholic owned a 7-0 lead with 15:10 to play in the opening half as Bridgewater opened the game 0-for-10 from the floor.

Back-to-back converted free throws from Jessica Mullen put the Eagles on the board and opened an 8-3 run from Bridgewater to trim the lead to 10-7 midway through the opening half.

Both teams traded points over the remainder of the first half as the Eagles cut the Catholic lead to 27-22 at the intermission.

Catholic extended its lead to nine points early in the second stanza before Bridgewater forced a number of Cardinals turnovers which turned into Eagles points as the Eagles knotted the game up at 33 each with 15 and change to play.

With 10:27 to play, junior Berlyn Seitz knocked in a trey to give Bridgewater (0-3) its first lead at a 36-35 margin.

Catholic regained the lead with a jumper before freshman Cassidy Burkholder put the Eagles back up with nine and change remaining in the game off of a jumper of her own.

Three minutes later, junior Holly Morgan knocked in a three pointer to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at a 41-37 margin with 5:46 to play.

Catholic ended the game on an 8-0 run, converting four free throws down the stretch to earn a 46-41 victory over the Eagles.

Morgan and Jessica Mullen led the Bridgewater offense with 12 points each.

Sophomore Shannan Thorne paced the Eagles on the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds as Catholic out-rebounded the Eagles by a 61-51 margin.

Catholic was paced offensively by Jill Woerner's 13-point effort. Kelli Josephsen chipped in 10 points for the Cardinals in the win.

Forward Katrina Owunna led the Cardinals on the glass with a team-high 11 rebounds.

Bridgewater forced 25 Catholic miscues on the evening which led to a 23-to-17 Eagles advantage in points off of turnovers.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday as they open the conference slate at Hollins. Start time against Hollins is set for 7 p.m.
