Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – On day three of the Rebel Spring Games, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team came from behind twice to earn the doubleheader sweep of Muskingum and seventh-ranked Cortland State. The Eagles topped Muskingum 4-2 in the opener before dropping Cortland State 7-3 in the nightcap.
Bridgewater had to come from behind to earn the victory in the opener as the Eagles stormed back with two runs in the seventh to upend Muskingum by a 4-2 score.
Muskingum got on the board first when a sacrifice fly to left field scored Jaclyn Hess from third to put the Muskies up 1-0 after two innings of play.
Bridgewater got things going in the third when sophomore Kasey Anderson doubled to left center with two outs. Freshman Amanda Lutz stung a 1-1 pitch to left field during the ensuing at bat to plate Anderson, knotting the game up at one each after two and a half innings of play.
In the home half of the third, Muskingum regained the lead when a fielder's choice plated the runner from third with the bases loaded to put the Eagles behind by a 2-1 score.
Following scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Bridgewater got back on the board and knotted the game up at two runs each.
Anderson opened the inning with a leadoff walk before swiping second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Lutz then used a sacrifice bunt to advance Anderson to third before a well-placed bunt single in the infield from Melanie Lamb drove in Anderson to tie the game up, 2-2.
Bridgewater starting pitcher Aven Thomas punched the Muskies out in order in the home half of the sixth before the Eagles came alive in the top of the seventh to take the lead.
Sophomore Brea Hinegardner led the inning off with a walk before a bunt single from junior Morgan Williams put runners at first and second with no outs. Following a sacrifice bunt from senior Ann Komara, which put Hinegardner and Williams in scoring position, a sacrifice fly from the bat of Heather Jenkins to foul territory in left field pushed in the go-ahead run to put Bridgewater up 3-2.
Anderson finished the scoring for the Eagles with an infield single to plate Williams, putting Bridgewater ahead 4-2.
Muskingum tried to get some offense going in the seventh with a leadoff walk, but Thomas slammed the door to give the Eagles their seventh straight win by a 4-2 score.
Anderson paced the Eagles on the game with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The sophomore speedster drove in a run and scored twice more to propel Bridgewater to the win.
Thomas went the distance to pick up the victory in the circle. The junior allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out five to earn her second win of the year.
Four Muskingum players pounded out a hit each to pace the Muskies bats, while Brittany Folk picked up the loss.
In the nightcap, Cortland State took a one-run lead after an inning of play before the Eagles tied the game up at one each in the second.
Bridgewater loaded the bases before an overthrow by the Cortland State shortstop on the throw home allowed Melanie Lamb to score from third to knot the game at 1-1 after two innings of play.
After a scoreless third, Bridgewater capitalized on three errors during a three-run fourth as the Eagles pulled ahead by a 4-1 score.
Bridgewater's scoring started when Sarah Goodman scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded to hand the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Lutz drilled a two-RBI single up the middle to score Williams and Komara to extend the BC lead to 4-1.
Jenkins, the game two starter, kept the Red Dragons at bay in the top of the fifth before the Eagles added some more insurance in the home half of the frame.
Lamb reached on an error by the right fielder before being driven home on an RBI double to put the Eagles ahead 5-1. Later in the inning, Bridgewater capitalized on a pair of Cortland State miscues to plate two more runs to extend its lead to six runs at 7-1 margin after five complete.
Both teams went down scoreless in the sixth, before Cortland State plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles earned their second win in as many days over a top 10 team with a 7-3 victory over seventh-ranked Cortland State.
At the plate, four Eagles each manufactured a hit in the win, while Lamb and Komara led the way with two runs scored a piece.
In the circle, Jenkins picked up the win, allowing three runs on nine hits. Jenkins punched out five batters on the evening to notch her fifth win of the season.
Cortland State was led offensively by a 3-for-4 performance from Abby Martin, while Lyndsay Rowell picked up the loss in the circle in a complete-game effort.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday when it wraps up the Rebel Spring Games with a doubleheader against Trine and Bluffton. Action is set for an 11 a.m. start.
